I'd probably go for a Savage combo then upgrade the trigger. Latter go for a better scope if I found I used it alot for long range varmint. $00.02 I feel the savage is very accurate out-of-the-box and the action plenty strong for the smaller rounds. Good luck!

dchristian,If you are looking for a .223 for general shooting, e-mail me at tsm849@aol.com. I have a Ruger M77 Mark II, as new in box. Great gun (in my opinion).[This message has been edited by holyshot (edited 03-19-2002).]

remington 700. Any configuration, but I would not go for the ADL line. Personal choice is the varmint models.

Ruger m77, Mine has put out over 10,000 rnds with out any problems. I have had it for about 6 years. Very reasonably priced then and now. I bought another one for my wife last summer. It was acutally cheaper than mine and is ss laminate.

I am with Hunter280: Savage for accuracy. With both Savage and Ruger, you are likely to want to replace the triggers. There are no really "right" answers here, mostly opinions. You need to go to the shops and "try some on." Even if you are not able to shoot them, you should be able to get a good idea which fit you the best and are most natural for you to handle. That may be a different rifle than fits me. I know several reliable folks who also regard the Sendero highly.

The Savage is not the best looking gun. However it shoots d-- good out of the box.

Kinda apples and oranges. All of the rifles mentioned are good. One that wasnt brought up was the Savage tactical. Built to be sniper rifle for police. It's a tad heavy due to the bull barrel, but it's tack driver. And it's under $400 (wholesale).Steve

For something a little more exotic, why not check out GunBroker Item #3422102 the Steyr SSG 82 Sniper rifle, caliber is 5.45 X 39, its not .223 ... but there is a lot of cheap surplus around. Although its not inexpensive, it will probably appreciate in value as a opposed to a Browning, Remington or Savage which will only depreciate after the first round is fired ... kinda like driving that new car off the showroom floor ...
