I have a 12 ga SxS shotgun with 18 1/2 inch barrels. On the side it is marked Spencer Gun Co. on the top between the barrels is `New American Hamerless' Can anyone tell me where or who made the shotgun and maybe a value the inside of the barrels has some pitting also I have been using it for CAS.

If you would be a bit more specific experts maybe could help you. What is the name on the shotgun. What is its condition. What is its serial#? I inherited a shotgun from my Dad. It was made at least 70 years ago and is in 95% condition. Yet it was a cheap thing then (may have sold for $5.00) and while it is priceless to me it has little value to others.

"Spencer Gun Company" was a trade name used on some of their "hardware" shotguns by the H&D Folsum Arms Company of New York City. They were importers and distrubutors of firearms. Most of the domestic "hardware" shotguns were made for them by Crescent Firearms Company of Norwich, Connecticut. No serialization records exist to the best of my knowledge."Crescent" made firearms were inexpensive but well made which is why many of them still exist and even may be in service until today. There is no collector interest in them except as "Grand-daddy's" or "Great Grand-daddy's" shotgun. If it is Damascus barreled, then it should not be fired with modern smokeless loads. If and only if it passes muster by a gunsmith competent in older Damascus barreled arms is is safe to use with Black Powder loaded shotshells. They are not easy to come by nor inexpensive, but can be found. It is certainly worth keeping as part of your family history even if it is not found to be in shootable condition by a good gunsmith.Regards
