Rem.25-06
I've owned a 25-06 for several years. Want to know if it can be used on elk at ranges 200 yd's or less with a good 120 gr. bullett.

I, too, have nothing but 25-06's in my collection. For my use, there is no better caliber, but I would be very hesitant about it for elk. I'm sure that, given perfect bullet placement with a 120 gr. bullet (NOT a ballistic tip!) that an elk would hang on the meatpole, but I wouldn't be the one pulling the trigger. 0 -
I agree with lax; Marginal at best, still I'm sure several elk have met to their demise with one. I'd use a 270 or something a little larger, bet you can't gues what that would be!...
Though I was born to royalty, I was snatched at birth, so treat me as the noble I am!!!0 -
Lots of elk fell to the old 257 Roberts and I know that the bullets we have today are better than the 40s, 50, 60s!! 25-06 in the hands of someone who "wouldn't shoot a bull in the ass with a BB gun", would do just fine!! Elmer Keith even talked about shooting one at 400 yds with a 17!!!! 0 -
I think I half to agree with groundhog davastion.I plan on going out west to hunt mule deer and there might be a chance to hunt elk,and I din't want to buy another gun. 0 -
I have killed several Elk with my 25-06.I however use a 87 grain Speer Sprizer, and I only shoot them in the neck.Oro 0 -
I am sure someone, somewhere has killed an elk with a .30-30. Does that make it a good cartridge for elk? I don't think so. It is generally accepted that .270 is about as small as you want to go for elk. 7mm, 30-06 .300 mag and .338 are the most widely used. If you are hunting a cow, then I would feel much better about the .25-06. [This message has been edited by He Dog (edited 03-23-2002).] 0 -
i shoot calibers smaller than those shot by most to hunt deer(17 rem. 222 rem, 223 rem,22 hornet). if your hunt for enjoyment and are not worried about shooting something or not, a 25-06 will kill any elk in the country. thats if you shoot that elk where your supposed to. if your recoil shy as i am, you sould be better off shooting something you can hit with than gutshooting an elk with a 378 weatherby. good luck 0
