Colt Army Special 38
I have a Colt Army Special 38 and was told by the previous owner to use "38 Colt" ammo instead of "38 Special." What is the correct ammo for this revolver with a swing out cylinder? The serial number is 321XXX with the number 3 written below that. The "38 Special" rounds seem to fit fine and my friends Police Positve appears nearly identical and he uses "38 Special."Thanks to everyone in advance and everyone who has replied!This Colt cylinder turns clockwise and does appear to have steps in each of the cylinders. It would be my opinion these old guns were made "before + P ammo" and what little extra you would get might not be worth "pushing the limit" of these older guns. If it were mine, I would only use "factory loads" without the +P rated loads.

The 158 gn bullet is not too strong so long as you keep with a target shooting load level of your powder, simply a light load. I use the 158 in 38 long colt for this type gun and load light. I also load a .357 158gn bullet in a 38 spl with a 3.2gn load of Accurate Arms # 2 and have used them in the 38 colt army. It is very difficult to get 38 long colt brass, I know as I have tried, for reloading, so I have loaded the light 38special as well.
