I have just received my P89 that I bought at auction and I am amazed that the disassembly instructions are so poor. The little booklet that accompanied the pistol is not very explicit. I thought the MKll instructions were poor but these leave a lot to be desired.Maybe it is me as I am a new shooter but it is almost like Tiawanese computer instructions. Is there a source on the web that has better illustrated instructions. I did master my MKll but am hesitant with the P89 as I would like to shoot it soon, ha ha!

It might be hard to explain without showing you, but I'll try anyway. First make sure the gun is unloaded then remove the magazine, the check again. The lever that releases the slide when it is locked back needs to be pulled out. You do this by pulling the slide back and at the same time push the end of the pin from the other side; it will go through when you line up the takedown notch. When the slide is back, you have to look down into the gun from the top of the slide, you will see a flat piece of metal that has to be pushed down in order for the slide to move forward. Once the slide is off the frame, turn the slide upside down and put some pressure on the end of the guiderod spring. Keep it in your hand or it will fly away and get lost. Once the guide rod and spring are removed, you can slip out the barrel. DO NOT pull the trigger. Do your cleaning or looking around then reverse the process to assemble. If none of this make sense, it's partly my fault, but you might be better off having a gunsmith show you. You can call Ruger for a manual.Good Luck!Roy

actually, that about says it all, good directions the way I pictured it. The flat piece of metal he is describing looks like a loading gate (for lack of a better word) which is pressed down so as to basicaly block off the magazine well. Ruger should fax or send you a disassembly procedure or a new owners manual.

Thanks for the info. That stuff I already know how to do, but i would like to know how to go one step further and take apart the slide itself - like removal of the firing pin and such.

I sent you an email on detailed striping of the slide. DON'T USE A HAMMER AND PIN PUNCH as someone suggested.
