choice btwn 30-06 or 400 win mag
I AM INTERESTED IN BUYING A LONG RANGE SHOOTER AND HAVE A CHOICE BETWN 30-06 Rem 700and 400 MAG RIFLE. BOTH HAVE BULL BARRELS AND ARE CUSTOM MADE WITH GOOD SCOPES. ANY THOUGHTS ON WHAT TO GO FOR? THANKS LOOKING AT SHOOTING 600 TO 1000 YARDS.

Echo to Saxon's remarks!!! 0 -
Since ED KUGLER got a confirmed kill at 1300 yards in Nam with a 30-06 I would think that it would do you just fine at 600 to 900 yards. Plus the ammo is so much cheaper. Lake City match grade Millitary surplus 30-06 is avalable and very resonable. 0 -
Another vote for the -06. It will do the job you want to do on paper and you probably should not be shooting at anything else at that range. 0 -
While I believe that the -06 will do anything better than any other cartridge, for paper at 1000 yards, the .300 Win Mag might be a tiny bit better. Since most of the current crop of long range folks are using it, there might be some justification for that remark. However, the difference is small and the -06 isw capable of fine work at that range and was the standard for many, many years. Much cheaper to shoot in powder, cases AND barrels (the .300 WM will burn out a barrel about 3 times faster than the -06 [based on a sample of 2])).
