suggestion: use the hydroshoks for carry / home defense and use the standard stuff for practiceMy wife practices with lead SWC's but keeps Winchester Silvertip HP's in her house gun (44spl revolver)

Warning: I'm not an expert, I just read a lot. That said, I agree with Tailgunner, use Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP) for defense and Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) of approximately the same weight bullet and power for practice. You want the recoil of the defense rounds to feel exactly like the recoil of the practice rounds if you ever need to fire for real.

I wouldn't keep one box of rounds for a lifetime. You have to be able to trust your self-defense ammo with your life, after ten years how do you know the rounds are going to fire? It has been suggested to me to fire your self-defense ammo every year or so and buy new rounds. After all, how much is your life worth?

Well so far I agree with the above. I personaly use Corbon in my carry pistols including my .380. Like Tyson said if you carry change you ammo on a regular basis. I would get 2x as much as you will think you need (probably about 50rds). Shoot half of now so you are use to it and know you are accurate with it and most of all that it WORKS in YOUR gun. If I carry alot I try to change the ammo in my guns every 6mo. Doing this meens I have to buy and new box of ammo every 18-24 months. I then go out and shoot the old to be use to it. Also for just practice you and inexpensive round in as close to the same weigh as your carry ammo.

    Mindstorm,

Pricey? The difference between a few bucks can mean your life or family member's life so SPEND the extra cash and get the good stuff.

Most of my guns are loaded up with Hydro-Shocks or Corbons. Remember its not so much as ammo selection but it is shot placement that is going to neutralize a threat, specially with a .380

Please don't let your ammo selection worries interfere with some of the other things you should be concerning yourself with.

Situational awareness, readily available cell phone, a good flashlight, etc. Being comfortable with your gun is also important, because you may as well defend yourself with a spork if you can't place a shot - regardless of how potent your ammo is. (While some home invaders may be scared off by the sound of a shot ringing out alone, is that a gamble you are willing to take?)

Another really good idea I came across is to take your defense weapon outside, and shoot it without earplugs. You may want to limit this to a shot or two, but you won't have earplugs in when you need to defend yourself, and this way you'll know what to expect. Minimize the variables as much as you can.

    I use Corbons

let your local dealer guide you or find an instructor and tke a few lessons - you should know why you are shooting a particular ammo
