10 Yr. old's first deer rifle
I HAVE A 10 YR OLD SON HAS GOTTEN THE TASTE OF WHITETAIL HUNTING, KILLED HIS FIRST THIS PAST YEAR....GOING TO BUY HIM HIS OWN RIFLE.. HE IS CURRENTLY SHOOTING MY WIN MODEL 100 IN .243...IT IS 99% PLUS AND WANT TO KEEP IT THAT WAY (WE ALL KNOW HOW KIDS ARE)...I WANT SOMETHING HE CAN ALSO SHOOT AT THE RANGE WITHOUT SAYING OUCH...WE HUNT IN SOUTH LOUISIANA WITH WOODS BUT HE HUNTS MOSTLY PIPELINE BOX STANDS...300 YRD FUTURE SHOOTS...ONCE HE CAN MASTER THAT AT THE RANGE.I WANT A GUN THAT FITS HIM NOW(PLEASE DON'T SAY HE'LL GROW INTO IT).....................I'M LOOKING AT THE YOUTH MODEL 7 IN 7MM-08..I WAS TOLD I CAN GET A ADULT STOCK IN THE FUTURE FOR ABOUT 80.00 ..ANY FEED BACK FOR THIS YOUNG LAD.........THANKS...........

Whats wrong with the .243? It has less recoil than the 7mm. It won't have the energy for large deer for over 300 yds as the 7mm but is great for kids. If you want less recoil than the 7mm,you can go 25-06, but a well placed shot is important for both the .243 and the 25-06 at long range. 0 -
AEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE Coonass..I am from Jennings...Live in Florida now...I have both .243...And 7mm-08...Friend i work offshore with his son shoots the 7mm-08..I think it has a little less recoil then the 270...Good for Louisiana deer tho...

The 260 Rem. is a good young person caliber. Not bad recoil and still enough power to get the job done. I think Rem makes them in youth model in the model 7. I'm not sure about youth model 700. 0 -

Have you thought about a Thompson Contender or Encore ? They come in just about any caliber. As your son gets older, you can change the barrel to a larger caliber.A short youth model stock is available for the Contender, and can be changed out later for a longer one.Contender and Encores have good resale value because there is a big demand not only for complete guns, but also for stocks and barrels.Contender and Encores have tremendous versatlity and are fun to shoot. 0 -
If you go with the model 7 buy the adult stock now, just in case. I would also lean to the .260 Rem. 0 -
Although i am not a youth,(wish i was)I have a model 7 in 7-08.It has very mild recoil,is extremely accurate,and it has Never let me down on whitetail deer. 6 one shot kills to date.The longest-260 yds.I sincerely believe this would be an excellant choice.Not only for his youth, but for the rest of his life. 0 -
On the 260, another choice would be Browning A-Bolt II, or Browning Micro Hunter. I know they are chambered for this round and wish I had a Micro-Hunter in 260!! It might be the ultimate factory whitetail rifle out there for us eastern guys. 0 -
7mm08 and the 260 are a great choice. Did you look at the new Ruger compact rifle. My wife is small 5 foot and she really likes her Ruger RSI in 250 savage low recoil, but it won't reach out as good as the 7mm08 or the 260. I think it will be hard to find a gun in a youth size that will reach out 300 yards without harsh recoil. Thats why my wife likes the 250, I bought her one in 308 and she didn't like the recoil. The gun scared her and she didn't shoot it well at all. 0 -
What you said?....Just go on down to Beaudroux's and get u all'dem bolt workin'things. Line 'um up all an start at the little hole and go to the bigger hole. When ya get to the one dat'says 338, ya gone to far so back-up some. When ya get back to the one dat says 308, snatch it up like a duck on a junebug. Since dar ain't on such thing as a tall coonass, all dem short ones will do you fine. Doe's come in dem space-age cinthe..cnnthic..hell..plastic stock so ya can use 'um to pattel yo perio. Get yu some sheels..not those for your shoot'em gon, but rifle sheels and take little coonass out an praktass. Get momma to boil some water so dat when yu come back from shootin' she can cook up dem gators and swamp-beavers young-un just kild. That heaver bullet (thing dat goes out the barrel) will do yu good back on the bayou. 0 -
Go with the model 7 in 243 youth and get the extra stock. Don't cut down a regular stock just sell the shorter stock later. My kids shoot 788's in 243 and 308. I was gonna get a model seven but I was already happy with my 788's so I just got a third one. All the stocks and accessories are interchangable that way. One tip though, if you have more than one kid keep them all shooting the same caliber ie:243 not 243 and 6mm. For ease of reloading but mostly so they don't grab the wrong ammo in their excitement (or distraction)
