For under 200 yards you're overgunned.

The 25-06 is a great cartridge but as was said it way overpowered for what you described, and it will have recoil in a lightweight rifle. OK now, what is your overriding reason for the selection? Is it recoil, or just a caliber suitable for white tail? What kind of rifle are you wanting, single shot or bolt action? My perference is the Ruger No. 1 International in 7x57 Mauser. This rifle is beautiful with its Mannlicher stock and it is a sweet shooting rifle. Hands down, it has the best action I have seen on any Ruger. It also has mild recoil. Plus you get the advantage of greater bullet selection in 7mm, if you hand load. The .25.06, in a lightweight rifle, will have noticeably more recoil than the 7x57 Mauser, but still manageable. To me the .270 is a kicking gun, especially in lightweight rifles. One other alternative to consider is the .260 Rem. It also has a mild recoil and is balistically much better than the .243 with a much greater sectional density. Just some thoughts.Boomer

If there is on caliber and gun that I like the most it is the 25-06.I bought mine from a man who moved from Penn. and he said it was the best.I believe it is an outstanding caliber you can load to your hearts desire.I would say you have made a good choice.Mine is as accurate as they come. Thanks String

I was just checking the ballistics on the 7mm and I'm very impressed- good and flat with good long range energy. If it's accurate- it's a great must have!

I have had a Winchester 70 in .25-06 since 1978. It is extremely acturate and never fails me on Whitetail. I quit counting at 25 deer taken. The longest shot was 342 paces to the animal and 326 back to get my gear. Last chance on closing day or I would not have taken the shot. I did not know I made a hit until I checked. The buck had dropped straight down on his belly, never taking a step. It was a confident building thing. Now I have a .243 and a .270, but keep going back to the .25-06. I can tell no difference in recoil between the .25-06 and the .270

My sons and myself all hunt with 25-06's, largely as the result of my oldest son having done extensive research on ballistics, trajectory, etc. My vote is for this caliber for the most versatile--hands down ! The three of us have taken many deer at ranges from 40 yds. to close to 400 yds. and NEVER had one step out of his tracks, including the latest, a large doe walking at 267 yds, shot offhand. As to bullet weight, I use Remington 100 gr factory ammo, but both my sons use Federal 117 gr. Recoil?--the 25-06 is a pussycat compared to the 7x57 and no more than the 243, unless you use hot handloads, and even then it is mild compared to the 7x57. My 25-06 wears a 3x9 scope during deer season and a 6x24 during the summer, when I put it to use for groundhogs, using 90 gr Speer Gamekings in front of 52 grains of 4350--never lost a groundhog in 11 years of shooting, but don't expect to win any contests based on weight ! Buy it--you can't go wrong !!!

great choice for a deer rifle. try the 117gr. nosler partition for whitetails. recoil is less than a .243 in my opinion.

The 25-06 is probably hands down the most practical of all calibers if you want one gun for varmints to deer. I have owned and shot them for over 20 years. Not just one but several different models of Rem.700. I have several friends who have Win. 70s and Ruger No 1 and 77s. All have performed very well. I have come to think of the 25-06 as shooting "heat seeking missles". Winchester 90 gr PEP or 87 gr V-Max are what gives this caliber rights to be called the "varmint gun from hell" in the eyes of the varmints. 117Sierra Spizer boatails and 120 Hornady HP do very well on the deer sized game. Don't let anyone try to talk you into a 243. They're not even in the same catagory!! The slower powders 4350, 4831 generally will suit most rifles and I've had some very good loads using 3031. All in all it is a very easy to get along with cartridge. GHD PS. My nickname for the my personal 25 is "Devastation Supreme"

ELMOR KEITH WOULD PUCK IF HE WAS AROUND TO HERE ALL THIS STUFF ABOUT 25-06. It's over rated and over boored, a 1000 rounds will eat the barrel up.
