Cutting a VR Shotgun Barrel

Is there a decent way to cut a shotgun barrel with a vented rib? This is a cheap Maverick 12ga with a 28" bbl that I only have $50 in. I want to make it a 18.5" bbl. I have no problem cutting a plain barrel with a pipe cutter and smoothing out the edges, but it's the VR I'm not sure about. Should I just scout around for a used short barrel?Roy

  1-cut thru a rib block.2-if thats not practial than salvage the muzzle end block, they are usualy soft soldered on, and relocate it3-remove the rib all the waywould any of those methods help ?

  Would you consider a trade? You send me the vent rib barrel and i'll send you a 18.5 barrel with now rib?

  Cut it just in FRONT of the rib (from the muzzle) with a hack saw, then chuck it up in a lathe and turn it down (hopefully to only about 1/4 thru the rib) GOOD LUCK! ...Mark

  Thanks to all for the tips. Will taping the good end help with burrs, or just get in the way?Gunsisme, thanks for the offer, but I don't know the future of this gun as of now. I'll keep you in mind if I decide to trade for a short barrel.Roy

  Hey if you're short on tools, just scibe a line using a square in front of the closest post to the lenght you want, wack it off with a hack saw and true it up with a file (remove burrs with emory paper, polish up with finer paper. Then some cold blue. It's making that first cut that makes you nervous, but you'll be surprised how easy this is. What are you going to use for a front sight?

  I would recommend a die grinder with a 1/32" cutting wheel. It can be a little tricky getting a square cut on round stock, but I've never found a hacksaw that will do the job nearly as well.

  Find someone who has a metal cut off saw, Shim the barrel so it is square with the frame on saw. Be sure to clean off burrs inside and outside of barrel.. Round file works good for inside. Good Luck.
