spray paint a barrel???

Ive got a buddy who duck/goose hunts. He says that he went through a bunch of remington 870, mossberg 500, etc. But they all turned into rust piles after a few years (he's not to big on gun care, just using them) He said that the last time he bought a 12ga he brought it home, cleaned it up with rubbing alcohol, then used grey primer paint from the hardware store to coat the barrel and all metal parts. He claims that they havent rusted yet, about 4-5 years.What do you guys think? Has anybody else done this? Any reply will be appreciated.

  I have a M 500 I have abused.Bought as a "disposable" gun.It has killed at least three turkeys a year for 14 years.It gets Kroiled each year and then put away.Spraypainted with Krylon each spring in three dull flat colors and then colored burlap is JB Welded to it each March.I now have about three dollars a turkey in it and guarantee a partner and a nephew will kill their first turkey with it this year.cpermd

  I spray camo'd a 7mm mauser. It is a good brush gun and "could care less" piece for abusing and beating around with. Best part is, if I need to throw it down, for whatever reason, I can just touch up the paint. I used rustoleum red primer, and then some green and grey outboard paints built for protecting against salt water. Worked great.

  my experience with primer is that its just that-primer.water will penetrate most primers. they must be followed by a coat of the appropriate paint. barto

  I'm with barto, primer is porous and won't stop rust. Have you ever noticed those half repaired cars rolling around the street with the rust showing through the primer?

  I don't blame him! Around here we have Alkaline water in the rice fields. My daughter has a beautiful Iver Johnson champion 20 gauge. She fell in the water and hiked back to the truck to change. It was covered with rust in 20 minutes. Try camo tape. I had a rifle covered with it and it eliminates the glare and protects against scratches and scuffs.

  I sporterized an Ishapor .308 that had been painted at the factory. I found that using primer, flat paint and spraying it with a Spar Poly with a flat finish worked really well. It's been through a Michigan snow storm and a North Carolina thunderstorm without any signs of rust.

  Have used Kal-Guard gun kote on several withgood results, including a aluminum alloyAR-15 upper. Its hard and wears well. Ofcourse the oven baking is a pain but wellworth it. It is like the original M-16finish in color or thereabouts. Comes in a12 oz. spray can.
