New Taurus Revolver, orange plastic disk

Here i go showing my ignorance/inexperience.I picked up my new Taurus 971 (Tracker) .22 WMR yesterday and the cylinder had an orange plastic disk covering the chambers. I took it off, went to the range and put 50 rounds thru it an enjoyed it.While I was there one of the sales people was advising a customer not to dry fire his pistol without a dummy round in it or empty brass. he emphasized rim fires were especially at risk for damageI returned, cleaned the revolver and put the orange disk back on it. My question is can I dry fire it and is this disk protection against damage or do I need empty brass in it. Was this disk only for shipping like when Hewlett packard ships a new printer?I am having a hard time keeping my finger off the trigger!!!remember.... experience is the direct result of poor judgement!

  The orange disk won't last that long.

  Yeah, spend the money on the snap caps or just use empty brass. That love of squeezing the trigger will disappear quick when you hear a big crack.-NIK

  The plastic disc is a simple "see-I'm not loaded" device, because, if you look close, you'll see that it takes up all the available space which would be occupied by the cartridge rims. That's all it is designed for; dry firing will trash it. Buy the snap caps. Peace..........
