Beretta 92FS vs. Springfield 1911
I'm interested in purchasing a handgun for self-defense use...the 1911 is certainly a classic, but how modern is it really? I've tried the 92FS and love it for the simplicity, safety, and reliability. Does anyone have a preference between these two? I'm leaning toward 92FS because of higher capacity, NATO standard ammunition, and modern design, i.e. decocker vs. grip safety/single action in the 1911. The 92FS is cheaper than the Springfield 1911 and it seems to be accurate...any opinions?

How is the 92FS being a 9mm a problem? I'd say it becomes an issue of shot placement. And should you need to make a follow up shot the lighter recoil would allow you to recover quicker from the previous shot.[This message has been edited by GreenLantern (edited 03-05-2002).] 0 -

How many rounds do you think you'll need?.45 ACP is a proven one-shot manstopper...roughly twice the stopping power of 9mm on the Hatcher scale.But, it's your life. 0 -
Wow what a great topic. Ever since the Goverment switched from a 1911 to the 92FS People talk about which one was better. I really think it's just a matter of age for some people. (I mean no disrespect by that) My dad got his commision into the Army in the early 70's. He carried a 1911a1 for years and still does. It's the only handgun he would trust his life to. My frist hand gun was a 92FS i got about 6 years ago. I have shot both and i like the 92FS better. More Fire power easy follow up shots. When i carry it i have Federal or golden saber ammo in it. Now don't get me wrong i like the 1911. About 3 months i bought a used colt 1911. (I posted on this board for advice.) The gun i got was i pretty good condition it just needed a new parts to work 100%. I put a new extractor pin and a new recoil spring in it. Now it works great. (I also had to clean it for about 2 hours, Some people never clean their guns.) I don't like the idea of carrying "cocked and locked" I would rather have the bretta with the first shot double action then follow up shots single. I personaly like CZ-75 in 9mm. I think you might want to look into them. I don't own one right now but i might get one as soon as I recover from buying that desert Eagle. So the only way i can answer you question is buy the Beretta 92FS, if you are a gun nut like i am you will buy a 1911 later anyway.Why doesn't someone ask why the army went from a m-14 to a m-16? I'm a life-long fan of the 1911 and carry one almost daily. BUT-you're always best armed with the pistol you are the most comfortable with, shoot best, and have the most confidence in. Sounds like you should opt for the 92F. If the brothers-of-the-forum convince you that the 9mm is inadequate, there is the .40 S&W option in what is basically the same pistol. 0 -
1911/45acp is the way to go! The .45acp was developed for stopping power back during the Phillippine Revolt. U.S. issued .38 weren't stopping "doped" up Phillippine attackers before they hacked G.I.s to death with Bolos.the 9mm was and accident, when George Luger increased the stoping power of his .30 Luger to a 9mm (the largest size bullet his .30 Luger case could hold!). As far as modern design ...the 1911 is dang near 100 years old ...a PROVEN design. And a number of "modern" designs are based on this proven design. If you look at a drawing of a .45 you'll see about 12 parts, all made of STEEL (OK ...the grips aren't *G*). NOW look at the Beretta ... it's frame is made of ALUMIMUN ...and count the parts (better take your shoes and sock off ...your going to need them toes too! That and someone elses.*G*) It has a TON of parts ...which weapon do you think may develope a mechanical problem 1st? SO why did the U.S. military drop the 1911 and go for a 92F? It was ALL politics! The U.S. wanted NATO countries to drop there .308 rifles and go to .223. And the NATO countries wanted the U.S. to drop the .45 and go to 9mm ...It was a political trade off ...not the BEST move, just politics. Now lastly let's look at capacity, YES the 92F hold more rounds ...the only thing it's got going for it! But there are a number of magazines out there that increase the capacity of the 1911 ...13rounds is the highest I've heard of ...except for the Taylor drum magazine (which I don't think is practical). I've laid out a number of facts here, so draw you own conclusion. All good points...thanks-- I'm looking for a companion for my M1A rifle, so I'm definitely intrigued by the Springfield 1911A1, although the availability of cheap 9x19 ammunition and standardization with U.S. forces might push me toward the 92FS.As for capacity, 10 rounds would be fine with me, as that is the [cough] maximum in my state (CA). 7 shots in a .45 would seem sufficient also... 0 -
There is a 1911 9mm. So is the question a .45 or a 9mm or the 1911 or Beretta? For self defence it is still bullet placement. Which do you shoot better? Which one is most comfortable to hold and shoot? If both were in front of you and you had to choose one to use which one would you pick up? 0 -
For Rob 3448: I have a .40 caliber auto-pistol (Ruger K944 which I like but is a bit large for concealment...not to mention heavy). I have thought about adding a smaller framed pistol to rectify that situation. One of my choices was the CZ-75. I know a thousand people have asked about it on this forum and didn't want to rehash old ground. But, I was wondering if you had any intel on its reliability and accuracy. And by accuracy, I mean how does it stack up against: 1. The Ruger in .40 2. The Smith in .403. The Beretta in .40 I looked at the Sig and the H & K and then I looked at the price. sorry NOTPARS I can nor really give any advice i don't know that muck about CZ i was just thinking about on getting one. I was at may local gun shop today and i think the CZ look great but i don't know anything about how well they work.SORRY again i don't want to give you bad advice 0 -
If you want a "modern" gun AND stopping power (If those FBI agents in FL were still alive I bet they would not recommend a 9MM) I would check out the Glock or S&W in 40 S&W. It is a great compromise between 9 and 45. Is this for carry or home? Makes a difference. 0 -
The .40 is a mistake (in my judgement), it's like the .41mag (which the law enforcement people loved)! It suffered the "middle child syndrome", most everybody goes light ..ie 38/357/9mm or heavy ..ie 45acp/.44mag. Time will tell here but I think the .40 & the 10mm will fall by the wayside. AND as far as D.A. ... you ever try to put rounds on the paper shooting D.A.???? ...takes a pretty good man (or woman *G*) to do it! Just my opinion. ...Mark

I'm presently in the same boat as the poster. I think the only conclusion for me is to get both. My experience with "real" m1911a1 pistol is they shoot like crap. Atleast the ones my infantry Inf unit had. Fortunetly for me at the time I really sucked with hand guns but seemed to qualify Expert with it. Scarey thought! They where very old worn out 45's, shiney rattles!! 4th ID now look at them, Boasted to be the "highest tech Infantry Division to date. I bet there sidearms don't jingle while on a little stroll now days. Point is it fired therefore it is. Will a 70 year old beretta that rattles like the vintage 1911's function as well as the 1911? Time will tell. I really doubt it. Beretta m9 is by far more accurate than the 1911's of old. I have a llama maxI and it bets the crud out of that issued piece of Colt. Smith&Wesson's new 1911 is another front runner, a tad more money that the mil-spec Springfield, great reviews. Alot of people are hell bent about Smith&Wesson aiding the man strip us of firearms versatlity handles'hi-caps blah-blah. To those look at Colt no more civi arms, Ruger mini14 changing the mag well as to not accept hi caps. To me things like this are worse for the consumer than politics. 2004 the hi-cap ban could be lifted if our president backs his supporters. I hope so! I will surely VOTE SO!

"....45 ACP is a proven one-shot manstopper..." But only about 60% of the time. Go with the pistol that fits your hand. That's far more important than the particular pistol. It'll mean you can place your shots and that is paramount.
This on going discussion of which is better is nonsense. No pistol round is a 100% one shot end to a fight.0
