Christian B -- Gun Safe
I have one of those Homak metal gun cabinets you referenced in the earlier gun safe thread. I picked it up on sale at a local Bass Pro Shop (DFW) for $89. I really dislike it for the storage of scoped rifles. The scopes rest against the back of the cabinet and the barrel never touches the foam standoff (so all the weight is on the scope -- I imagine this is a bad thing; to me it is, anyway). I have a 16 Gun Stack-On cabinet on order from Cabelas. They claim to have better stand-offs for scoped rifles. (edit) All that said, I'm also an apartment dweller and a real fireproof safe is not a viable option until I buy a house. Unfortunately, I believe our biggest risk in an apartment isn't from the avaerage break-down-the-door burglar, but from the maintenance folks that have a key, and a lot more time to defeat whatever defenses we have, without neighbors suspecting a thing. Thanks for taking the time to give me the info. I'm going to re-think my options... but as you said, the whole huge fire safe isn't much of an option at this point.Send me a link to all good and reasonably priced safes you know of... or the one you've just ordered.christian 0 -
I don't know that the actual security is any better than a Homak, but the stand-offs may be. Here is the link, I got the 16-gun model on the way: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/pod/horizontal-pod.jhtml?id=0005602&navAction=push&navCount=2&indexId=cat20799&parentId=cat20799&parentType=index 0 -
How thick is the door/frame on the one that you've already got?christian 0 -
The door is 3/4" thick, but it is just bent sheet metal that is creating that thickness. There is no solid 3/4" piece of metal anywhere. The metal itself is something like 1/16" thick. So if the door was open and you were at it from above, it would look something like: ____ | | .75" |__________________________ (door face)The construction is similiar to a metal cabinet found in offices for storing supplies, if that helps any. 0 -
Guys, While waiting for my large safe to come, I got to thinking about ammo and mag storage. I found, what I thought was a very good deal at Wal Mart. It's a Sentry brand safe. It will hold 8 long guns (they say 12) and has one full width shelf. This isn't a sheetmetal cabinet, but a welded 250 pound safe. I added extra shelves for ammo storage. It cost (I believe) $268. Take a look. You need to get it from Wal Mart though. I have seen them advertised for a couple of hundred more!
