S&W Mod 19 & trade deal
Anything special about 19's in 6"? How do they compare to the 586 6"? I have a trade deal working on two refinished revos, a 6" Mod 19, and a 4" Mod 10, for my SS Colt Mustang 380. He really wants my 380 for an ultra compact carry gun. I like it, but my paws are a little to big for it. The mag floorplate digs into my ring finger, and my grip accidently pushes the mag release which can be very bad if I had to use it. My Wife likes it, but she prefers a j revo in 442 or 649.The guns he has are in fair shape at best and I'm placing about a $200 value on each revo as a shooter after he refinishes them; Does that sound about right? Would you do it? I can get them blued, matte, maybe nickeled.The little un-ripe Colt is the only 380 I have in the stable. Should I thin the heard and pick up two more S&W shooters? Or, Should I keep the no longer made SS Colt Mustang 380?(I'm kinda thinking about a DAO bob & trigger job on the Model 10.)Your thoughts appreciated.Roy

Roy--this is one of those questions that we can (and will) ramble on about; but in the end the decision must be yours. What bothers me about the whole deal is your description of the revolvers as being in "fair" condition; because in my book fair isn't very good. If you do the deal your wife still doesn't have a J-frame. As far as whether or not the 6" Mod. 19 is/was a good gun--one of the best! Ditto for the Mod. 10, but of course the Mod. 19 has adjustable sights and the more powerful cartridge. As for a comparison with the 586, the 19 is a K-Frame and the 586 an L-Frame. In the long run, using many full power loads, the 586 would prove more durable; but the 19 is more handy and better balanced. I'm not too clear on who's refinishing the revolvers, You or the current owner. If you've got to pay to have it done I'd definately not do the deal. If the refinishing is going to be done by the current owner, and the poor conditon of the finish is your reason for rating the revolvers as "fair", but they are otherwise mechanically sound with good bores and cylinder chambers--then I'd be tempted. Of course, you can probably sell the Mustang for enough to buy something in really good condition for your wife. 0 -
The deal includes him refinishing the guns however I want. My wife already has a couple of J frames to choose from as well as a couple of 3" K frame round butts. I've got plenty of revolvers, but, what is plenty anyway? I don't have a 6" Mod 19, I do have a 586, but it's a 38 special (yes 38 special). As I stated earlier, I'm putting a value of about $200 each on the guns after the refinish. The Mustang really was/is not for sale, I was just offered the trade if I wanted to. I'll probably wait to see the guns finished before I make my decision. I have a 4" Mod 19, just was not sure about the pros & cons of the 6" mod 19.Roy 0 -
The model 19 in a 6" is a GREAT target and shooter, but poor for carry. The 10 is a nice gun. When you rate them "Fair" is that because of the finish or is there physical properties making them fair as well? If it is JUST the finish, than it might be a good deal, if there are mechanical, bore or physical properties making them fair, than it is a poor deal. The model 19 is more compact than a 586, but probably a little less durable, only differences. Also, be sure to check the 19 very well as there were some that developed problems, not many, but some.You say you have a 586 in a "38 special"? Smith never made the 586 in a configuration other than a 357 magnum. What makes it a "38 special" or was it modified?

Fair finish, good mechanical condition on the 19 & 10 revolvers. Some surface rust.The 586 6" 38 Special I have was an uncataloged special order for the Brazilian Police. I called S&W and they said I have 1 of 91, 586 6" Round Butt (yes round butt)in 38 Special. I don't know if this was an overrun that never made it to Brazil or what. They mentioned my gun being number 821, whatever that means; the factory letter is $30 for the rest of the info. I actually came across another one that was 63 numbers away from mine. I would get the factory letter on that 586. That had to be a special order special production run and with limited numbers would quickly become a collectors item as it is DEFINATELY not standard production. I would like to get a hold of one of those for my collection.
