Calling "He Dog"
All I have heard in the last few years about long shots on targets and varmints is 223, and 7mm Mag. I shoot 30-06 or 308 for deer, mainly and for bear also have a 338 BAR. What is good for long 3-500 yard shots at gophers etc? Deer , I stick to my 30-06 165 gr. spitzer bt unless I hear something else. Most shots on deer here in Missouri are under 300 yards.

I have to tell you Binder, that I do not shoot varmints, thus I am probably not the best one to respond to this question. I would think .223 or .243 would be fine for chucks and gophers to 300, and .22-250 is hot these days I believe. My answers regarding the .223 were in relation to deer at 300, where I think it is not enough gun for deer, albiet it will take a human at that range. Sorry, but for varminting you really have me out of my element. Try a message to "Varmit Hunter" (that misspelling is the way he does it.) and best of luck! 0
