Reloading Question
I am having to use BR-2 large rifle primers on my 22-250 reloads.
I have been putting 39.2 grains of H380 under a 53GR Barnes TSX FB.
The Barnes book says you can go over this charge a little because of the ring lands groves in the bullet.
My question is ,
Do you think I should back off a few tenths of a grain to offset the large rifle primer?

Yesterday I was playing with my 257 Roberts that I've had some accuracy problems with. I loaded up 3 rounds using 35 grains of Varget and a 115 gr Nosler B.T. The OAL was 2.920". This group of 3 averaged about 7/8" at 100 yards. I loaded up 3 more with the same powder and charge, except this time I made the OAL 2.900 and the grouping opened up to about 6". My question is, can .020" make that big of a difference in accuracy? Next question is, how good of a bullet is the Nosler B.T. on deer? I heard it said once that they have too thin a jacket to get adequate penetration, and my final question is, on bullets with a cannelure, such as the Speer Grand Slam, is it necessary to seat the bullet so the cannelure is at the rim of the case? 0 -
What type of Alliant? Bullseye, unique, one of the dot powders, etc?

1. Are you crimping too tight? Are you using a roll crimp instead of a taper crimp?2. Try reducing your loads 10%, then work back up in .1gr incriments. I like to load 10 rounds of each, then shoot from a rest to find the most accurate load. You may be surprised how small amounts of powder effect accuracy. My bet is that you will find a load that is accurate and does not keyhole.

The powder is "Power Pistol" 0 -
Its a taper crimp. I don't think I'm crimping to tight. How do you tell?(about the crimp) 0 -
FIRST THING I'D CHECK IS THE DIA. OF THE BULLETS. .45 CAL SHOULD MIKE OUT AT .451" OR .452" IF THEY ARE KEYHOLING OUT OF SEVERAL GUNS THEY SOUND UNDERDSIZE. TYPE OF CRIMP OR POWDER CHARGE SHOULD NOT CAUSE KEYHOLING. 0 -
they are .451 0 -
Speer # 13 shows 7.0 to 8.1 gr Power Pistol behind their 230 FMJ slug (6.3 to 7.4gr behind their *230gr* Gold Dot slug) your close to the bottom with that charge & FMJ bullet.Check your scale calibration.Try working up in .1 gr increments (10 rounds each load) range test for accurcy and function while watching for pressure signs. As a final check, see if you have the same problem with factory ammo.*edit*[This message has been edited by Tailgunner1954 (edited 02-27-2002).] 0 -
What's your target distance? Under 25 yards? 0 -
The target distance is under 25 yrds. I do not have that problem whith factory ammo. 0 -
Judging by tailgunner's specs and if the Gold Dot is 230gr you may actually be too hot. He makes a good point about checking calibration. Have you noticed extra recoil or your reloaded brass flying further? I would drop the chg. to 6.7. Load 10 and maybe 10 at 6.5. Bullet weights in tailgunner's specs being equal you can go minimum between the 2. For target shooting aim for the lowest chg. at which your pistol will function. I would also load some at 6.3.[This message has been edited by oneshy (edited 02-26-2002).] 0
