In the .270, Winchester brand brass has more capacity than other brands. 60 gr. of H4831 is not a compacted charge in that brass. Check your loading manual to make sure your using identical componants. At any event you can begin at the starting load and work your way up grain by grain to book maximum or until you encounter pressure signs. Jack O'Connor recomended 62 gr. of H 4831 in win cases. That is a compacted load that proved too hot for my rifle. He said crushing a few grains of powder is ok, but so far I haven't had to do it.

One of the simpler ways to compact powder (without crushing it) is to vibrate the case, causing the powder to settle, giving you more room. I use either a dremel tool and simply hold the case to the tool body for a few seconds, you can watch the powder settle. Another technique is to be cleaning brass in a vibrator and set the loading block next to it (that is if your bench vibrates like mine does). This allows you to compact (settle) several cases at once.(Depending on bullet length and seating depth, generally) if the powder is below the neck, you will not be crushing any (or many) grains. As Steve said, back off to the starting load and move towar maximum slowly, checking for pressure as you go.

H4831 NOW COMES IN SHORT CUT, IT USE TO ONLY BE LONG: IF YOU USE A POWDER FUNNEL WITH A LONG DROP TUBE 3" TO 6"(SOME COME WITH THIS LONG TUBE AS AN ATTACHMENT) & POUR POWDER SLOWLY INTO THE FUNNEL, ALL SHOULD FIT IN THE CASE.

I reload the 270 130 gr. nosler balistic tip with 58 gr. imr 4831 for my gun and they work great. Found it to be the best round for hunting. the 130gr. boattail is a good load for shooting also. I dont do anything special to load them.

Thanks - I loaded starting at 56grns and worked up to 58 in 1/2 steps. No compaction needed yet. I will shoot these up and see if I need more before going higher...

Well - high winds at the range did not give me an accurate enough shoot. I only shot the 56 and 56.5 grains today. Elevation stayed somewhat consistant but 3"+ windage. Will try again soon. Thanks guys!
