Sounds like you have some junk aftermarket magazines, probably USA. All Mini-14 magazines are the same. I think the ProMag magazines are fine. Anyone else have anything to add on them?

I tried a couple and none would lock into any of my mini's (#181 & 182). Emailed the supplier and they told me to grind the rear catch tab?? I decided not to and just returned them for a refund. I think some mini's differ from others slightly in the mag well, but since it did not go into either of mine, I concluded it was the mag.I think they are well built, but it just did not work for me. Yes, junk aftermarkets but at least affortable and work fine with my Rancher. I had heard that the mags for the 180 were different. For some reason, I've been pretty lucky with my aftermarkets. I've got a ton of USAs and Westerns that work perfectly with my Rancher. Not with the 180. This is one of the reasons I think that the mag for the 180 must be different in some way.

The early 180 series has a number of differences from the later guns. Ruger has changed their tolerances over the years. I've found that not even all Ruger factory mags will fit some of the older guns. Your problem isn't neccessarily the aftermarket mags, rather the older variation of Mini 14.

So which will work? Were there mags specifically made by Ruger for the 180? God, can you imagine what those must go for, considering the outrageous amounts people are paying for regular factory hi caps. I have one or two aftermarkets that do work fine with the 180, but I'm interested in reliable 10 rounders. Maybe I should be happy that I have any that work at all. Thanks.
