Not absolutely sure, so someone may correct but...The 96/38 is a shortened 96, whereas the 38 was made as a short rifle from the start. The bolts should physically interchange, but you may have to inlet the stock to make room for a 38 bolt on a 96 rilfe.
"...hit your enemy in the belly, and kick him when he is down, and boil his prisoners in oil- if you take any- and torture his women and children. Then people will keep clear of you..." -Admiral of the Fleet Lord Fisher, speaking at the Hague Peace Conference in 1899.0 -
Jonk is correct on all of the above. Do not, however, overlook the fact that taking the bolt form one rifle and inserting it into another rifle may cause exessive headspace, as the barrels of these rifles were factory headspaced to their original bolts; which is why the bolts, receivers, and barrels were all stamped with the same serial numbers. 0 -
Bent bolts aren't original, they were originally straight on the swedish mausers, but American shooters don't tend to like the straight bolts, so on most sporterized mauser action they heat up the bolt and bend it down, or replace it with one prefabricated bent.
"Because the next dealers price is only a click away..." -I thought that one up.

leeblackman, I'm pretty sure that the 96 was the only one with a straight bolt--the 38 and the 94 both had bent bolts from the factory. 0
