There are some real fans of the .22 Mag. at this forum, and I'm surprised that you haven't already gotten a dozen responses. I held off answering awhile, 'cause I've been digging my foxhole deeper. After I tell you what I think the missles will start flying. I heard years ago that the .22 Mag. is a cartridge without a reason for existing--that if it's too big or far away to shoot with a .22 L.R. one of the smaller centerfires is a far better choice. I got along just fine without one for many years, but what finally lead me down the garden path was just that Marlin makes such a pretty, quality rifle. I just had to have a blue 882 with it's checkered walnut stock--and I make custom rifles, so Marlin can feel complimented. Anyway--love the rifle. But the old sages are right about the cartridge. Frank C. Barnes describes the .22 Mag. as, "A very effective 125 yard varmint or small game cartridge..." (Cartridges of the World); and it may be so--but wouldn't you rather shoot a .223 Rem. and reach out a little farther? And those little .22 WMR cartridges are expensive compared to the .22 L.R.--and getting right up there with a box of generic .223 ammo. Well, I'd like to talk to you longer....but it's time to duck!

I enjoy the 22 Magnum. Its not that expensive to shoot if you grab a bunch when you see a sale somewhere, but I limit my shooting to 100 yards with it. I also shoot 22LR, but sometimes, that little extra zip with the magnum helps quite a bit.

Depending on the critter I will take the 22 mag out to 150 yards. It all depends on you, the rifle, the ammo, and your scope, pretty much in that order I took a squirl at about 80 yards last fall, walking accost a field and wondered if I could do it. Took two shots, but still took him in the head. Find the ammo the rifle likes, for me it is the regular old winchesters, they group the best. Finally a scope that is going to let you see that far. I have a BSA 3-9X33 on a marlin bolt action, it rarely leaves 5 power but I have cranked it up to 8 or so for a long shot.
