I guess you know that YOUR H&R went the way of the dodo bird--the current H&R Company won't work on your rifle and has no parts. Your problem can only be the result of wear. Either the magazine or the magazine latch (or both) has worn to the point where the connection isn't as tight as it once was. Your holding up on the magazine compensates for this. The solution is to make the magazine fit well again by altering the shape of one or both of the parts. Sometimes the latch can be successfully altered by putting a little weld on the contact area and then filing it down gradually until the desired fit is achieved. You may also be able to stretch the metal a little by carefully peening it near the contact area. Working on the magazine is usually a little more complicated, as sheet metal is more delicate than a solid part; but if your rifle's magazine locks into the magazine well and against the latch with a notch or piece of metal attached to the back of the magazine, you may also be able to add to or stretch this part at the critical location. You may be able to obtain a replacement magazine from Triple K Manufacturing, San Diego, CA, 800-521-5062; or Numrich Gun Parts Corp., West Hurley, NY., 941-679-2417.
