As far as I know, Mossberg is not an old company, so there won't be any "antique" value to it, and the 500A is far from rare these days.As for value, when Wal-Mart carried them, one could be picked up for $169. Now that Wal-Mart DOESN'T carry them, the cheapest Ive seen is about $220 new and $160-$200 used, depending on condition and accessories.

I tried posting this before- but I guess it got lost. The Mossberg 500a was made between 1962 and 1973. I have one and it is a fair scatter gun. The ring would come loose on some and this was fixed in 1975. I have a 500 at ( I think thats right) and much better. Sale yours for $180.00 and your doing good!

They still make the 500A as far as I know, after the company started making 500's in cartridges other than 12ga, they designated them A, B, ect. The A mean that its 12ga. I don't think you'd get $180 for it, considering mossbergs a lower end company, not to say they make bad stuff, they make great shotguns, they just ain't beretta's thats all. I'd say if it was it good + condition you'd probably get $150 for it, less from a dealer, but more from a sucker.

Actually there are some very collectable Mossbergs, I'm only a novice at them as far as collectability, but I can tell you that as far as shotguns go, the 16 ga is one of particular collector interest, I have one. Its just not common, and it has the old single bar action. But the things you've been told of the 12ga are all in the ball park on price. When did Wal-Marts in your areas stop carrying them, they still carry them here.

Don't know much about Mossbergs, but your bottom line in your post is interesting."Finally, lots and lots of make-up".

A friend of mine has a Mossburg single shot .22 that was made in the late '40's ... does that make them an old company???As lee said, they are a "lower end" gun, but definately not junk ... They are very reliable and just your basic, no frills multi-purpose firearms.

Thanks for all the info on what it may sell for should I find the need to some day. Is it possible to narrow down the age a little more than a 10 years?[This message has been edited by cgwahl (edited 02-17-2002).]

Wal-Mart around here stopped carrying shotguns because "they don't want to carry personal defense equipment" as the manager put it. Suprising because this is conservative-lik-no-other southern Arizona. I bought mine NIB for $195 a few years back. I thought I got a good deal, but when they decided to stop carrying they were liquifying theit inventory, selling them NIB for as low as $160.

Doesn't the Mossberg have an aluminum reciever?, and like mentioned above a single-bar action? These features would turn me away from buying one(or even using one), but thats just me.
