Thompson Center Contenders
Is it correct that there is an old style frame and a newer style, and that all barrels are not interchangeable? I've been cruising the auction sites looking at bbls. and it seems that some are different than others, can someone enlighten me?Is it required that some bbls. be bored out where they connect to the frame in order to mount them, on the older frame? I know nothing of these, so be patient with the dumb questions, please. And once it has been bored out, then it is totally useless for a newer frame, correct? I'm only going off of what I saw on an aution description, I dunno any of this.

The barrels that look like stainless steelare not interchangeable with the blued ones. There is also a new frame with a different name that is made for stouter loads & the barrels are not interchangeable. 0 -
First thing to remember is, there is a Contender & there is an Encore. They are two entirely different guns. The Encore's frame is longer and heavier. The Encore will handle Higher intensity cartridges like the .308 & 30-06. The contender can't handle these. There is also a new second generation Contender. It will accept 1st generation barrels. The Encore and Contender barrels do not interchange. for more info try: WWW.tcarms.com/g2.html WOODS 0 -
There is the Encore and Thompson is coming out with a new contender frame. As to the barrels you see up for auction. The blue and stainless are interchangeable.Actually there are 5 types of barrels made over the years. The older ones will only fit a newer frame by replacing the locking bolt on the bottom. I called Thompson when I bought an old octagonal barrel and they sent me the parts free. Just a matter of taking out the retaining pin and putting it back in again. The only ones that need to be sent back to TC is the Alloy 2 barrels. They were made for a few years but watch that you don't get one of them. The contenders are great guns. Handle from .22 up through 45-70 calibers. If you want modern high power rifle cartridges then you will need to go with the Encore. The TC site has already been mentioned so here is the TC Custom Shop: www.foxridgeoutfitters.com 0 -
