Replacing Shotgun Barrels

Does anyone have any guidelines for when a shotgun barrel should be replaced? Visual inspection?Measurements?Characteristics?Number of rounds?Other?Thanks.

  Semi-auto? Pump? Side-by-side? O/U? Replacements for Semis and pumps will usually (but not always) "drop-in" if made by the original company and reasonably contemporary to the gun's production. Side-by-sides and O/Us require the touch of a master gunsmith and is usually expensive.
