If you're talking about your front sight--no, it would not only be unnecessary but unusual to remove it for bluing. Usually when a staked front sight is removed it is for replacement and usually the sight can not be reused. Yes, the bluing salts will remove the paint, and a new dot will have to be applied. Not too difficult. The back sight should be in a dovetail and is easily drifted out and replaced with whatever you desire. It would be normal to remove it for bluing, and it is easily reinstalled. Remember, if you replace the back sight with a different model you may have to also replace the front sight if the new rear sight is higher. As for turn around--good gunsmiths are usually backed up because their work is in demand; although now days its getting hard to find a good gunsmith; which also contributes to the slow turn around time. Twelve weeks is just about my backlog also. It's best to get your work done as locally as possible so that if dissatisified you can get the matter adjusted to your satisfaction face to face.

Good gunsmiths have more to do then just bluing. I have one in GA that is 14 weeks behind on bluing.
