Ammonia in Bore Cleaner

I saw a post that said ammonia was not good for stainless steel. It actually said to try to find a bore cleaner low on ammonia for cleaning stainless barrels. I have stainless rifles and have never heard this one before. Yesterday I was cleaning with my favorite, "Hoppies #9" and noticed the number one ingredient was ammonia...now what?

  Ammonia is also said to damage nickle plate.

  I do not know if it damages stainless steel or not, but I do know that it is in the cleaner I use, as a main ingredient, and it does an excellent job of cleaning out the copper, and given the lesser of two evils, I'd say I'd be willing to live with the possibility that it might be bad for my barrel, versus the known fact that my barrel WILL fire like crap with the copper build up inside it.

  I forget who it was I was talking/posting with about the ammonia, but, they said it weakens the steel around the throat area which may lead to cracking in the throat/chamber area. I also use High ammonia cleaner (shooters choice) and would like a definitive answer on this one.

  Saw this posting and had to run check my Butch's Bore Shine. It has Ammonia Salt in it but the label claims "no abrasion" in tests. I do know it strips copper out of a barrel. I usually swab the barrel up real heavy and then set the rifle up muzzle down into an old T-shirt, that way the copper residue and excess solvent run out of the barrel. It will leave a green spot on the T-shirt. I have seen other solvents that advise you to not leave their product in the barrel for an extended length of time.

  My Dad taught us kids we should always run a patch of sudsing type ammonia down the bore after shooting militay surplus ammo that could possibly be corrosive----he said it would arrest any effects that could damage the bore----he also said we should wipe the bolt-face with it as well

  If it leads to damage to the throat/chamber area, then why not use a bore guide?

  Thanks to all, good thought idsman75.I was just concerned about hurting my new stainless 10/22. It sounds like there is no real concern.
