Can anyone tell me what the round adjusting knob on the back of the reciever does? Where the stock meets the reciever on the top there is a round knob with a small indexing lever. What does it do?

On other Winchester autos at that time period, those 'knobs' were the screw head that, when twisted and unscrewed, removed the stock from the receiver, or the stock-lower receiver from the upper receiver. If it hasn't been used in sometime it will be VERY tight; Use a little penetrating oil.
