Registered with Winchester
If someone says they have a old gun like a model 97 or model 12 that is registered with winchester what does it mean? Does it increase the value of the gun?

If that word is stamped on the rifle it only means that the patent is on file with the US gov't. This was an attempt to cutdown foreign cloning back during the early 1900s. 0 -
He may mean he has a letter from Winchester that he or someone else requested (usually paid for ).Telling the history of the weapon.

ATF, you may be right. But, recognize that Winchester doesn't issue those letters, the Cody Museum does, but that's hair splitting. They use the official Winchester records, or what is left of them, anyway. Last time I checked those papers were running $35/page, but it was a REAL good 'insurrance policy'. 0 -
Talon - that's not quite correct. Before the Winchester collection moved from Conn. to it's present location in Cody the curator would occasionally issue a letter certifying how and when a gun had left the factory - if he had access to the records. These letters were done on the official letter head of the Winchester Museum. Cody can do verification with a limited set of guns (rifles, some M21 shotguns) - you used to be able to cut the cost down by becoming a member - or donating time to the museum. Years ago they needed a lot of help with the boxes of records they'd gotten from Winchester and former workers who had salvaged some of them. The stuff was a real mess. I don't know what their policies are these days; I'm out of the collecting end of these things. 0 -
The "Winchester" museum does not belong to Winchester, I think. The move took place 25 years ago, and now houses ALL the old records. Go to www.bbhc.org/firearms for the current status. 0
