How can you tell a nickle finish from an ultimate stainless finish? The bluebook lists both and I don't know which one I have. Also how can you tell the year it was made by the serial no.? Does the serial no. give any other info about the gun?

I have a Colt Python polished SS with a 8" barrel. The gun is NIB. all paper work, carrying case, the cylinder has never been rotated. I bought the gun in 1993. gun serial number is PY3985 My question is, what's it worth? Thanks, I appreciate any help...[:D] 0 -
Call Colt in Hartford, Ct. 1-800-962-colt. Give them the sn, they can tell you the year of manufacture as well as the original finish. 0 -
If the gun is made of stainless then its not nickle plated... 0 -
One quick way to tell, but is not guaranteed, is that nickel has a slight yellowish hue to it. Bright stainless doesn't seem to have much color at all. Brushed or matte chrome looks similar to brushed stainless but has more of a grey hue.Disclaimer: These are just my observations, your results may vary. 0 -
I dont know if this is any help to you or not but I own a Colt King Cobra that is SS and the hammer and trigger are SS also...

Many stainless steel alloys are non-magnetic. I am not sure if this is true for a stainless Python though. 0
