gunnut,The Mini series of rifles are hell-for-stout. They are built as smaller "battle rifles", that is they work no matter what. They are not designed as target rifles, nor can they be made into target rifles. This is due to the action design and small (thin) barrel. Most folks who are "unimpressed" with the Minis want MOA rifles and did not do their homework before buying one. (Kadaver - this may not apply to you. It does apply to many former Mini owners. It is also not an attack on those who honestly disagree). The AKs and SKSs are as accurate as the Mini-30/Mini-14s and as robust. They are also more likely to be viewed as "assault" weapons, since both have been military issue. The Minis are less "assault rifle-ish" and a bit more PC.Persnally, I like the light weight, ruggedness and responsiveness of Ruger's Mini-14/30s. With a bit of modification to the trigger group and bedding, you can make them into a 2-3 MOA rifle at 100 yards. It is super easy to mount a scope on a Mini (esp. the Ranch rifle series), and there are some great aftermarket products for them (stocks, scope mounts, mags, etc.). They make really great home defense rifles - short, light, plenty accurate for home defense distances and powerful enough to permanently stop any threat. In short, they are great for the purpose for which they were built. Enjoy your new mini and remember that it can serve you well - even in battle conditions (mud, rain, snow, etc.) should the need arise.[This message has been edited by luger01 (edited 02-10-2002).][This message has been edited by luger01 (edited 02-10-2002).] 0 -
There is a company called Accuracy Systems http:/www.accuracysystems.com/ that provides HBAR conversions for the Mini-14/30.Their conversions are guaranteed to provide as little as 0.25 MOA @ 100M,depending on which version you choose, and utilize the stock your gun came with. That's as good as most target-modified AR-15s,at 1/2 the price, without jamming or forward assists.BTW,if you tailor some handloads for you Mini 30,instead of using the ex-Soviet-bloc or Chinese ammo, you'll find that your Mini 30 is capable of accuracy that's far superior to any SKS,even one that's using the same loads(if it doesn't blow up firing them, that is). 0 -
Oh,another BTW- where do you think the name "Mini 14" came from? The action is the exact same design as the M1A, which is one of the most accurate semi-autos in existence. 0
