300 savage or 30-30
well i have a .300 savage model 99 and it has been my deer gun for about 10 years. I really like the gun it was made in the 40's i think. my question is that the gun is not very accurate any more it's hard to get 7 inch groups from the bench with factory ammo at 50 yards. Where i hunt i never have shot a deer over 50 yards. Reloading is not an option for me because i only shoot maybe 40 rounds a year through the gun. I was thinking about maybe getting a winchester model 94 in 30-30. I was wondering what everyone else thought about this? I took the gun to my local dealer (he is a gunsmith too) and he told me the barrel is "shot out"I never thought about a new barrel, how much do you think it would cost?[This message has been edited by Rob3448 (edited 02-08-2002).]

Have you ever thought about getting the copper cleaned from the barrell of the 99? I have a model 99 in .300 savage, it also is of 1940's vintage and it shoots dead on. I would take the 99 to a gunsmith first and see what they think. Other than that a Marlin lever in 30-30 or .35 Rem would do nicely. 0 -
sorry didn't read the previouse post very well. Have you ever though about rebarrelling the 99? I think Numrich carries replacement barrells. 0 -
I have one exactly like yours, but mine is a takedown model. I would rather rebarrel a 99 savage in 300 savage that buy a new model 94 30-30. That 300 is a harder hitiing caliber and I prefer the gun design to the model 94. 0 -
If you're sure after scrubbing the barrel out properly that the barrel is shot, check with Savage and Numrich for a new barrel.Since you are fond of the gun and it's a better more powerful cartridge than the 30-30 why change horses? 0 -
Rob, I agree with the other guys. Try Butch's Bore Shine. It will clean any copper out of the barrel and if it really is shot out, have the 99 rebarreled. Shaw does a nice rebarreling job much more reasonable than Shilen, Lilja and other big names. The .300 Savage is a better cartridge than the .30-30 and if you like the 99 keep it going! 0 -
Hey guys, come one, don't you see the poor guy is trying to find a reason to buy a new gun, I do this all the time. Can't just buy something you don't need.Heck yea, go out and get you a new 30-30, you know you want one. And apparently you've already decided you want a winchester, sweet. Don't throw away that old savage though, I'd take it to a gunsmith who has one of those "Foul Out" electro cleaning kits and get him to remove the copper and lead deposites from your bore, and also get him to examine the lands to see if maybe you barrel isn't worn out.Also, it you do get a 30-30win, and you decide to get into handloading, you may think about having your camber reamed out to a .30-30 ackley improved. 0 -
The lever action guns are cleaned from the muzzle, and I have seen some that the crowns are worn from years of cleaning rod abrasion. Some of those old guns had the crowns "touched up" and they shot 100% better. Rob3448, don't be too quick to give up on your old Savage. It's a good old gun with lots of stories to tell. I say ... go with the Winchester 30-30 Model 94. Get a Model 94AE (angle eject) if you want to mount a scope. Get a "Big Bore" if you want more whomp than the 30-30. I've hunted with a .356 Calibre Model 94AE for over 20 years - no problems, no regrets, lots of fun ... and the deer fold on the spot.Bonne Chasse!

Well heck, you could have just said you were looking for an excuse to get a 94. You are not trying to convince your wife here you know! 94's are great fun, just be aware of it's limitations and keep your ranges down to where it is effective.It seems to me I remember reading a law requiring all red blooded American hunters to have at least one John Wayne rifle to pay tribute to a great (if not really good) American actor... 0
