sks detachable magazines

there is a small indented fixture just behind the rear side of the trigger guard. Cock open the bolt so that it stays open, now turn the gun over and smack the indented fixture with a screwdriver. Apply enough pressure to get the trigger group to slightly pop out towards you. Now lift the trigger group out and pull toward the rear rear to get it to pull out of the stock. Now, remove the fixed magazine by pulling it down and out. Finally, replace the trigger group as it came out. You will need to probably place the gun upside down on a bench/table, but use a soft towel etc to not scar it. Press down HARD until the trigger group snaps back into place. Do not take the small spring out of the stock whick is located in the recess just behind the trigger guard. Now insert your detachables.I used the scope mount which replaced the receiver cover, as it has no room to loosen up, due to the fact that it is securely attached to the gun.

I'm not sure if this is good or bad advise, but if your out shooting and don't have a screw driver, Iv'e used the tip of the bullet to release the triger. Iv'e never used the detachable mags, because of what I've read from the experts. If you have not spent your money yet, go through the search option, you'll read post after post, stay away from the detachable mags.

One of the main problem you run into with the detachables is that they are made different for the russian and the rest of the sks's. The russian mags have a larger flare on the rear side which causes very tight fitting ang fouling. Make sure when you buy them, they are the correct ones. I have bought them from centerfire systems and they all work well. They are a pain to switch, but this would not be my close quarters gun anyway so it is not really a concern.

i've used the 30 rd mag before and they worked fine. the ones that i've used were USA magazines. i didn't remember if you had to remove the trigger assembly to remove the 10 rd mag. i took my sks to a gunsmith the first time to do the change out, then i completely disassemble the sks to clean it and when i did that i replace the original 10 rd mag to it. now i wanted to use the 30 rd but didn't know how to do it. thanks for you advise JustC. I just purchase a scope mount and a Leapers scope will see how that works. probably later upgrade to a better scope if there's a need

Dwar........keep shooting that USA mag and see how long before it's true colors show. Be careful with those things man. Dangerous as a cocked pistol. I just sold my last 2 new in the package USA mags for $12.00 each. I keep them in some of my sks's just for looks but always take them out before actually going shooting.

I think that the safety must also be " on safe" before the trigger group will dop out.

C and DR. are correct in their disassembly instructions. In reading this thread over it crossed my mind that possibly you do not have a detachable mag. They made them both ways, detachable and non-detachable, but to the casual observer they look the same. Once installed the non-detachable can only be removed by disassembling the rifle in the same manner the original 10 round mag. is removed. The detachable can be readily removed and reinstalled, although it is kind of an awakward two-handed proposition.

Hello , the instructions given so far are correct , we have sold a boat load of sks's and have done a bunch of work on them , good luck with the detachable mags , we do NOT reccomend them at all , most of them (90%)just dont work right and are real problems as well as the "putting them in & taking emout " ordeal !!!!I love my sks (w-org. mag!!)its how the were designed & work !!!!!azgunnut2@yahoo.comd.a. stearns - gunsmith
