Kel-Tec Sub-2000
A week ago when Gun Test Magazine cameout with their artical on 9mm Carbins comparing High Point & Ruger, I too wanted to see this carbine for $170 up close. Went to a few gun shops and got warning to stay away from Hi-Point, but then took a close look at this Kel-Tec folding in half carbine that takes Glock, S&W, or Beretta mags. I'll admit it seemed like a little bad**s toy to me. What opinions do you experts has on this carbine, befor I drop $300. As always, your thoughts are highly appreciated.

Much better quality than High-point. A bit pricey, but a neat folder. Both companies offer a lifetime warrenty. 0 -
I bought one of the original Sub-9 rifles when they came out, and they retailed for about $600-700 as I recall. I have been very satisfied with the rifle, and value its unique folding ability. It is very high quality. I boughjt some USA 30-round magazines, used a hammer and a belt sander on them until they would go into the rifle, polished and tuned them until they worked, and now I have an "asssault rifle" that will fit in my brief case!However, I just returned late Monday from the SHOT Show in Las Vegas, and I made it a point to really look over the new Sub-2000. I believe it is a better rifle for a LOT less money. While talking about the rifle at the Kel-Tec booth, it was not clear to me whether it will take both the Beretta and Smith magazines without modification, or whether some modification is required to use one or the other. (In the Sub-9, the grip had to be changed at some considerable effort, but I do not think that is the case with the Sub-2000.) I did understand that the Glock magazines take a different grip/receiver shell, which is understandable since the Glock magazines are quite a bit fatter.Being mostly plastic, the new Sub-2000 is a bit lighter than the mostly alloy Sub-9. Kel-Tec corrected the design flaw in the Sub-9 that allowed the charging handle to cut the side of your finger if you let the fleshy part get too far up on the charging handle, thus catching a little flesh between the front of the charging handle cutout and the charging handle when you closed the bolt. Ouch! Depending on how much flesh got caught, you either had a nice half-moon cut, or at least a half-moon blood blister. I was very impressed with the new Sub-2000 rifle. I just got one of the SUB 2000 carbines in last week. I sold several of the Sub 9's years ago. As of this point the SUB 2000 is not just something you call and order. They are in such high demand and low availability. They only became available last fall 2001. They were supposed to be out in year 2000. The one I received is only serial # 007XX. With less than 1000 guns out so far, it may be a while before the gun is readily available.It does appear to be well made. As the Judge stated, these won't be as easy to change from one brand of mag to the other. It is not a modular system like before. The gun is a lot cheaper than the SUB 9, by almost $200. The lock system they added to prevent unauthorized unfolding is a bad idea and an accident waiting to happen, but otherwise I like the gun.The one I got in to have for sale is set to take the S&W mags. Thanks for the update. I've been following the Sub-2000 since someone recommended it to me. It's a small company and I'm not surprised they're having problems ramping up production. I wouldn't mind having one that takes S&W mags, since I already have some for my Marlin carbine, but I want to wait to see what the reports say about reliability in the long term. Its a smart looking piece of equipment. If I think about them much more I'll have to get one. Unfortunately, it looks like an attractive target for the anti's. 0 -
You are absolutely right V35. To be honest I'm suprised it could hit the market without being classified as a class III 0
