Help with S&W info

I need any info I can get on a S&W 4".38 sp. The finish suggests a miliary gun.It's stamped M4 99255 on frame behindcylinder swivel. Any info including valuewould be a big help.

  I was hoping you would answer. It isn't parkerized just areal rough finish. The numbers I listed don't match those on the butt.Is this a 4th change hand ejecter?

  Yes! you are correcton all three counts. Serial no. starts with a v, and there are screws in both locations you mention. Thanks much! any further insight is most welcome
