First lesson is to stay away from anything Cabela's. You dont want to know the numbers of people I have come in our shop with the ole line "I just bought this at cabela's and now it doesnt "Most of the merchandise with their name on it is pretty much junk especially the scope lines.I would send it back to them and demand a repair or new one.

Don't want to sound like "I told you so," but if you had bought a Leupold, (1) the scope wouldn't have broken, and (2) if it did break, Leupold would repair if free of charge. With optics, as well as a lot of other things, you get what you pay for.

Things happen to inexpensive optics more often than people realize. It's a numbers game with some companies. You are one of the casualties. The strongest made wire production recticle system is by Burris, second by Bushnell's 4000/4200(Bausch & Lomb). Just sent second 36X BR by Leupold back, bad right out of the box. (four in 15 months). Suggest you look at Burris, Bushnell, Nikon, and Leupold for conventional optics. Chances of you writing about same subject are close to nil. You'll be happier.Send Piney Ridge back under warranty, request to pay to upgrade.
    Happy Bullet Holes!

It appears I need to splain my actions. I was going to put the 4.5-14x50 vari x III on my 308 built on a 700 action. However, I discovered that the barrel was too big to fit the scope even with extra high rings, sooooo, I traded it for a B&L 6-18x40 and 8 boxes of Winchester Supreme Match 168gr HPBT. The B&L was used but I had no place for the Leupold. It wasn't the best trade but I wanted to shoot the 308 so I hastily agreed. I will say this though, I am more pleased with the Burris for my crop damage hunts at 350+ yds than I was with the Leupold. I got the 4-16x44 with the posi lock and illuminated dot. It is perfectly clear at all ranges and powers as well as offering the dot for last minute shots, and for less money. Don't get me wrong, on most of my custom stuff are Leupold Mark IV's.
