Turkey Barrel for Mossberg
I would like some info on what barrel for turkey hunting I should use. I have a Mossberg 500. It may not be the best suited gun for the job, but I like it. Thanks for your input. Also, any input on which 3" shell to use for turkey hunting. I am a whitetail hunter and have no turkey hunting knowledge but, my 5 year old wants to go so, now I will become a turkey hunter. Thanks much for your time.[This message has been edited by USMC (edited 01-28-2002).][This message has been edited by USMC (edited 01-28-2002).]

Do you have a "accu choke" barrel(removable chokes)? If you do, get an extra full(actually, I think they call it "extra-extra full") turkey tube, the kind that extends past the barrel. Mossberg manufactures one, and I prefer that one to the aftermarket tubes. Also, just because your gun accepts 3inch shells, does not mean that is what you should be using. I have done many test patterns through my 500, and the 23/4 shells pattern infinitely better than the 3" shells. A friend of mine who also has a 500, says the exact same thing. In this case, "Bigger is NOT better". I use 2 3/4 #5 shot exclusively for hunting turkeys.

I hunt turkeys as much as I can, In our group we have 8-9 835's and 3 500's, most of us like the federal 6's or5's. We all agree that the two best tubes we've tried in all would be the MadMax with a close second being the mossberg xxfull as previously mentioned, most of us prefer the3in for the 500. On paper the 6's work well to40-45yds, and all in-between depending on the gun. I recomend a cheep set of "fire-sights" no-matter which load you choose. This will be my daughters first year to follow dad also, Im looking forward to it!!! Good Hunting
