Shipping ammo
Okay I read the sticky on it. From what I get from it and what I have been told over the years,
shipping live ammo via the USPS is illegal.
Then my question is; if it is illegal then how are the big sellers on the auction side
getting away with shipping ammo via USPS?
They state they ship USPS and the shipping price they are giving is for Priority Mail.
I know because I know what UPS charges and there is no way I can charge $6 - $7 less to match their shipping price
on the same ammo via UPS.
I now understand why we do not sell as much ammo even though our price for the auction is within line with the rest.
Our shipping cost kills it because we ship within the law.

What carrier(s) can I ship ammo through? Do you have to declare what is in the shipment? Just need some info on shipping laws governing ammunition. Also, I am not a FFL holder. How can I ship a firearm legally? 0 -
UPS works best for shipping ammo - it can't go via air. UPS has some printable labels that you put on the box that they will fax to you. 0 -
Do they charge an astronomical "haz-mat" charge to ship ammo? 0 -
g'hog,When I buy ammo from retailers they charge me a $15 HazMat fee to ship UPS. I imagine UPS would do the same for "private" shippers, n addition to their regular ground shipping fees, but I've never personally needed to ship ammo. I prefer to shoot mine.I did have a guy mail me about 30 rounds of .35 Remington once that I bought on auction (along with some spent cases); thought it was a bit risky myself at the time. With the current situation at the P.O. I wouldn't recommend this practice. 0 -
My local UPS told me that no cal. under .50 needs a hazmat fee. So i only have ever had to mail UPS ground (and pay the regular fees) Now, maybe my local UPS shipping center knows nothing at all too. But i know u have to double wrap all ammo and write small arms ammo on the box. (then again the people at my UPS shipping center are not the smartest people) 0 -
You can ship live ammo only by common carrier ground transport. As SP indicated, the local terminals seem to have different policies based on the PC of the managers, so take a copy of the company policies. FedEx Ground is better than UPS in some places, worse in others. Pkg must be marked "ORM-D Small Arms Ammunition" on at least two sides. There is no hazmat fee for shipping ammo.NOTE to spclark: if someone is charging you 'hazmat' for shipping ammo, they are ripping you off!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is legit for powder, primers, but NFW on ammo. 0 -
Ammo must be shipped via UPS Ground Service, there is no Haz Mat fee.Mark the box ORM-DThat indicates small arms ammo

i dont know what ORM_D really means but it also has to be on gun-blueing chemicals. barto
the hard stuff we do right away - the impossible takes a little longer0 -
I used to work for a major air-frieght carrier as a Haz-Mat specialist. "ORM-D" stands for "Other Regulated Material". There are differnt classes of the stuff. Ammo is class "D". Things like spray paint (even the non-flammable kind) are classied as ORM's for air shipping. Even finger nail polish remover ships as a flammable liquid. Pick up a copy of Title 49 USCFR for shipping regs that all ground carriers have to use, or a copy of the much more restrictive IATA regs that all air carriers have to follow. We used to ship "ORM-D" by air all the time. I doubt IATA has changed their regs to keep it off air, but it is up to the carrier if they want to be more restrictive. Back in 89, we loaded SEVERAL of our 747's to the gills with ammo going to Saudi Arabia when the military stepped in and "commandered" some of our freight capacity. And even then, we shipped small personal quantities of ammo all the time. And no, I didn't work for UPS. Think purple and orange. 0 -
Everybody that responded to this, THANKS!!! I just asked a simple question that a lot of people probably had and got excellent response. Now I know that I can ship that 222Mag. ammo and those antique paper shells without fearing the wrath of the gov't!!!! 0 -
