need i.d. on 16g foreign shotgun

I have a 16 guage semi-auto shotgun that a man brought back from germany after WW2.It does not have a tube magazine but it has a sliding trapdoor where the shells apparently go in. The trigger guard looks to be silverplated. The manufacturer mark is a circle withe a C in it ad a Z. I thought CZ but I am guessing. The receiver has wood side cover plates that slide out when you remove the barrel to expose the inner workings of the follower. I cant figure out how to close the bolt either. I am at a loss and wonder if any of you can point me in the right direction.Thanks,Tom

  Could you describe the proof marks. also, how many shells do you think can fit in that pocket magizine? If it works like the Browning double auto, the bolt closes (snaps shut) when you put a cartridge into the magizine (a finger biter, that). Also, it's most likely chambered for 2 & 9/16ths" shells, and the auto action could jam on the US standard rounds (2 & 3/4ths").

  Talon thanks for the info on how it works.I was able to cycle the gun and it is a finger biter as you say. The pocket magazine holds 2 shells.The proofmarks on the side of the barrel are an N within a shield ..this is on top of a very small crown with a couple of squiggly lines and a figure 8 under it.(best I can do on this without a good magnifying glass)also a 47 by this. The bottom of the barrel has the same N in a shield along with the serial no 39XX. The receiver has the same N and the 47 on its side with ser no. On the bottom of receiver is a circle with a large C in it with a very small circle above the C. In the C is a Z with a line drawn through it so you would not think it was a 2. Next to the Z is another small circle. I did cycle a couple of dummy 16 shells through the gun and it did function ok. I assume that the 47 means it was made in 1947 but the manufacturer is unknown to me. Thanks for any help with this. Tom

  I can't help any further. I'm guessing now, but the "N" could be a smokless powder proof mark from Suhl, Germany. There were several variations of it up to 1950. Perhaps others here can help.
