which 7mm grain to go with?/
I hope this isn't a stupid question, but i'm going on a special hunt in OCT. and I want to sight my new 7 mag in with the same bullet i'm going to be hunting with. I'm going to hunt Mule deer in Utah and wanted to know what grain should i use and what brand has worked best for ya'll?Thank you for you Expertise!Jay

Hey Jay - Go back earlier in the discuss ( I think about 1:25am today) there is a discussion about the 7mm mag. Personally, I would stay around 150-160gr. I agree with the guy about the 160 Barnes-x. Super boolets and the lighter bullet will recoil less and be flatter. Some Muley targets can be pretty far off. 140gr Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silvertip. I have had outstanding success with accuracy and knockdown. It sounds light but is made to put venison on the table.

I'd use 160 barnes-x.Very flat shooting and excellent results.I shot a big mulie at paced off 309 steps that never knew what hit him. 0 -
Jay, I reload my 7 with Hornady 139 gr spitz. Has worked excellently on PA whities at distances to 500 yards +.......gun ownership, its not a privilege, its our right 0 -
Who ever said muleys are the same size as white tail, is smoking somthing funny. The day I see a white tail as big as a muley, I will eat my hat. 0 -
I would stay around the 150 to 175 grain range with a bullet such as the barnes x, nosler partition or the winchester fail safe. muleys are tough large animals so you need some knockdown. you should experiment to see what shoots best in your gun. groups less than 1 inch at 100 yds are what you are looking for. just because joe blows gun shoots a certain load well doesnt mean yours will. also you should set your gun for a 250 yd zero since long shots are not unusual hunting muleys 0 -

MNTNMAN - I did NOT say whitetail were as big as Muleys. I said Muleys are not much bigger or tougher than Whitetail. Having hunted both for many years I feel justified in my statemant. Guess I shoulda added the ol' "IMHO" thing ... 0 -
Jay, Bull is right as to what works well for one gun might not work the same for you. But if you are going to be hunting in open range like what we have alot of here in SD, I would stay away from the heavier slugs. You may want to look at the Barns X in the 140 gr class. After all, a Barns X 140 will retain about the same weight as say a 175 spitz will after the 175 breaks up. I use the 139 Hornys because they work good for me. I have had no problems on whites or mullies. good luck on your choices 0
