8MM Mauser Ammo
I was wondering if anybody out there can tell me just how bad it would be for my Mauser if I fire old (corrosive) Turkish ammo in it. My gun is a Yugo type and not a collectibe, but I would like to keep it in pristine condition. I'm concerned about the corrosive nature of the ammo. I have no experience with it and I don't know just how badly or quickly the residue would damage the bore, or if there are any other potential problems to consider. Would appreciate any help.

Is there any reason I shouldn't try to handload my 8x57 with a light bullet at high velocity, within pressures. I love my 98 but want more reach then the 200 grain bullets can do. 0 -
The turkish 8mm is quite corrosive, but like any ammo of this type cleaning is the key, use old GI bore cleaner or hot soap and water to get the corrosive salts out, if the gun is cleaned within 24 hrs you should have no problem, just double check the bore after 2-3 days to make sure you got it all, hope this helps. 0 -
Ammo Guy,Thanks for the info. I was concerned that if I didn't get it cleaned within a couple of hours it might start to corrode. I'm good about cleaning my guns, but sometimes I don't get back to my house right away. 24 hours should be plenty. Also, thanks for the tips. Where can I find the GI bore cleaner you mentioned? 0 -
Windex works great too. I use both windex and hot soay water on my mausers and nagants when I shoot corsive ammo. 0 -
The GI bore cleaner mentioned is WW2 era stuff (I think it was made through the 50s) formulated especially for corrosive primers and is hard to find nowadays. In any case, it comes in pint and quart size cans, rectangular, painted in green with black print. It is a white milky substance. Some users have reported that this didn't totally take care of the corrosive primers; hot soapy water and a thorough drying is really best. Then follow up with a regular bore cleaner and oil.

Thanks for all the good info! It's great to have a source like this to get answers to these kinds of questions. I appreciate the help. Now, time to order some ammo.......... 0 -
I've got the US military corrosive bore cleaner available. The only problem could be getting it shipped without a hazardous handling fee. I don't normally ship that type of thing. The can of bore cleaner is only $4.50, but if it has a hazardous handling fee attached ($17) in addition to the shipping ($4)it becomes impractical. 0 -
Incidentally, the turkish surplus is pretty hot stuff so I recommend a recoil vest or pad if you shoot a lot... also it is pretty accurate and reliable in my experience. I pulled a few bullets and found all powder to be in excellant shape.

The Romanian Surplus is pretty clean. Also check out www.gunsnammo.com for a real good price on S&B (non corrosive/196g) 0 -
In the Army,as a test, I scrubbed a new, freshly fired 45 barrel with GI bore cleaner and set it aside for a few days. On examining it, the bore was lightly pitted. Any MP with influence tried to get a spare unfired barrel for inspections because it was impossible to keep them unpitted in the field. All 30-06 and 45 caliber ammo we had was corrosive WW2 stuff. No '06 or 45 weaponescaped corrosion of barrel and gas system. Because of corrosion, the gas system of BARs became impossible to dismantle without breaking parts. Besides smelling bad, Army bore cleaner did a poor job. You'd do a better job with hot soapy water because the combustion products from corrosive priming are water soluble, not oil soluble.Dont forget to also clean the bolt face or leakage around the primer will give you a ring of pits around the firing pin. 0 -
1022man; I'm wondering- Is it the ammonia in the windex that cleans well? Doesn't ammonia corrode metal? Please give info. Thanks! 0 -
I am 99% sure that it's the ammonia that takes care of the corrosive ammo. Also I have noticed the recoil of the turkish ammo ALOT, they kick so much more then remington! I was shocked.
Fear the few, they are usualy right.0
