Assuming your targets to be small, like coyotes, crows, etc. I suggest a 12X Leupold.

I have found the best scopes for the money are simmons 44mag scopes. I love these. Also they are very reasonable for what you get. Maybe a 2.5x10 in a 44 would be perfect. Thanks what i have on my Ruger #1 243 rsi. I have had the scope for about 5 years and never a problem!Thats my 10 cents

I'd say the 4-16x42 over the 3-9x42, you'll want that extra magnification.I found that Springfield Armory makes good scopes for the money, I like them over the Simmons 44-mag, but if you want a Simmons 44-mag, I have one, used, in great condition, and will take a decent offer.

Thanks all for the input- I would like to keep the size down to 42X or less on the secondary in order to keep the scope as close to the barrel as possible. Your good info. leads me to around 4-12x42x in about $300.00- as that is my price range. Thanks Again!!

I killed over a thousand groundhogs using a Redfield 6X18X40 on a Rem 700 in 22-250. I have the scope and its still perfect. I would sell it for 150.00 plus shipping. I don't think you will find a higher quality glass for less. E-mail charliemill@earthlink.net

Just bought a Weaver Grand Slam 6x20x40 for my Savage 22/250. It is alot more scope than the Simmons 3x10x44 that I took off. Have alot tighter shot group than before. Natchez has v16 and v24 on sale for around $250. ;I do not know if it was worth the extra $50. for the Grand Slam but that is what I bought.

If your willing to go to 3 x 9 x 50 the simmons aetec is very bright. I work in a shop and find it brighter than the leupolds. of course they are 40mm, so they gather less light and are less bright. But all of us at the shop swear by them. Might want to check it out, to see if you like it. ps i got mine at cheaperthandirt.com and it was $150. Good luck

If you can't fix it with a hammer, take it to a mechanic. will270win@aol.com ~Secret Select Society Of Suave Stylish Smoking Jackets~

Is Tasco a good scope? I always thought they were substandard. Educate me!

Do you really want to chance it with a Simmons or a Tasco? Sure they make a few good products (Aetec and World Class) but it seems that the consistency of the quality is lacking. Too many duds in a batch and you are more likely to get the dud than if you go with something of higher quality. Never skimp on optics. Don't overlook the Nikon Monarch or Buckmaster.
