I dont think you can go wrong with a mossberg. They are extremely cheaper and easy to find, parts are cheap and easy to replace. Thats my 10 cents.

I have a 500 for home defense, and it has some serious intimidation power. I hooked mine up with a sidesaddle, heat sheild, top folding stock and even 1 round rubber buckshot for liablility purposes. Yes, each item is actually functional, and the package is very mean looking. You can install these accessories for either the 870 or the 500 come to think of it. It ll boils down to which you think functions better. If you keep her clean, the 500 functions great. By the way... If you get an ATI top folder and a sidesaddle, you WILL have to do some tweaking to get them both to fit. Very easy mod though...

Both are good guns. The only thing that I don't like about newer Mossbergs is the plastic trigger group. I think the 870 has a smoother action. I don't care for the 870 Express, I prefer the Wingmaster. If you are on a budget, go with the Mossberg. I'm sure you will find just as many goodies for either of the guns.

Rballi, what are your qualms about the 870 Express? I'm in the process of getting one for Turkey Hunting as well as defense & gonna sell my Mossberg 500 (cause I have the combo barrels with fixed chokes....)What is the liability issue concerning rubber buckshot? I live in the Peoples Republick of California & haven't heard of that one.... I need an education I guess.

I was always one of those people who stayed away from the 870 AKA...the wal-mart special. However a neighbor of mine needed money bad and sold me his 870 for one half of it's value. So I could not pass it up. I fell in love with the gun. At least for mine , it shoots fantastic patterns. Now I am an 870 fan for life. Not my favorite but a damn good gun. Hey where do I find these rubber buckshot shells? Would like to pick some up.

Try the Maverick 88 I got mine new for less than 200 and added all the goodies never had any problems and anything you can get for a moss 500 will fit.the only real difference is forend which has the action bars molded in, so if you want to use a front pistol grip or change the plastic to wood you need a slide tube from the 500 also the safety is a crossbolt instead of a thumb style.

East Bay,I wouldn't throw away an 870 express, and I do think they are a good gun for the money. But put an 870 Express next to an 870 Wingmaster and you will know what I'm talking about. I'll take a Wingmaster over an Express any day.Roy

As for the rubber buckshot & liability, I don't know the law exactly. All I know is, that if someone came into my home and I had to defend myself, nobody can accuse me of being out for blood if I gave him a loud and clear warning first. Just my reasoning, not actual law. If that ever happens and God forbid I get sued by the a**h***, I may reconsider which round goes first... Rubber or lead. That said, you should be able to get rubber buckshot in your local store. Don't pay those ridiculous $10 for three shells though. You can get a box of 25 for about $20. Email me if you still can't find. I'll get you some.
