ww2 ammo
I have a 37mm shell from I guess ww2. It has 1943 stamped on the but of the casing, and on the projectile. I want info on this round. If anyone has any info on ww2 ammo or any good ideas, your 2 cents worth may be priceless to me. All markings are clearly visible, and this is still a live round, with some light pitting on one side of the hull, I guess it laied on the ground for quite a while before someone found it. still live you say....? i would call your local police department and ask them to send over a bomb disposal unit. a round made about 60 years ago that has not been stored properly is DANGEROUS. you said that it had damage already why keep it? 0 -
What, dangerous? I shoot WW2 vintage 8mm Mauser all the time with no trouble. I've shot even older stuff in BAD shape. So long as no one whacks the primer it should be perfectly safe.

I'm not an expert on the big bore stuff, but have friends who collect it. First thing to determine is the loading, if possible. If it's a straight AP or similar loading, odds are it's quite safe. If it has an HE component, it could be quite lethal - and it could well be a 'destructive device' depending on the amount of explosive in it, which would be worth about 10 years to you. A lot of goodies came back from overseas in duffles before GCA 68; legal until then, but could be big trouble now. If you can send me a pic and all nomenclature you can find on the shell, particularly from the projectile / drive band, I will try to find out what this is for you. If no pic, please describe what, if any, paint, is present on the projectile, case / projectile / drive band material, etc. This is *NOT* - repeat *NOT* - something to treat with anything but the utmost caution until it is identified. tcg25@hotmail.com 0 -
Simpson, listen to dectre; explosive ammo that old (and unless it was a training round, odds are it is explosive) are very unstable. Nothing like old rifle or pistol ammo, the problem is not the propellant but the warhead. Call your local bomb squad and get it disposed of properly before a tragedy occurs.
