sks question
I don't know anything about an SKS.
How do you convert a fixed mag to a detachable 30rd mag or don't you?
I'm thinking about buying an SKS to keep in the trunk of my car because they are so cheap and I already have a couple thousand rounds of 7.62x39 ammo.

I'm going to buy an SKS for my Christmas present to myself.
I have a choice of an older Norinco with matching numbers or a new Yugo SKS. They each cost the same, $139. I imagine I can put a bayonet on the Norinco, but not the Yugo. This rifle will be for behind my truck seat.
Please give me the Pros and Cons on the Norinco and the Yugo.
Which would be your choice and why?

I think that answer was for the guy who asked about after market sites for a CZ52 0 -
If the SKS was made from the ground up tobe a AK clip fed model there won't be a slot on the bolt carrier for the stripper clip. That is one way to tell if is a sporter or not. However the Chinese did take some standard SKS's and convert them to AK clip fed models and called them sporters. Additionally they were converted by a company in Michigan to take AK mags. Not to mention that there were pre-ban SKS clip fed models that had the standard stock and bayonet that came set up to use the AK mags. Those were halted in 1989. The sporter models came in after that in the 1990's. The two stocks they had were thumbhole and monte carlo style. I've only seen a couple of the ones that were converted to a sporter model by the Chinese rather than originally made that way. "Sporter" was just a catch all that the companies did after 1989. You would see it on AK's, AR's, HK types, FAL types, clip fed SKS's and many others. In some cases it was simply put on the side of the receiver with an electric pencil after production and bluing of the gun. Without seeing the exact model that you saw it would be difficult to give an exact read on what it was, but it must have been a decent deal or else the other dealer wouldn't have bought it. 0 -
I have had, and still have a number of SKS's. One of which is a model D. The model D that I have was made by Norinco. It has the "regular" stock not "thumbhole" except the bottom is modified to accept AK magazines. It also came equiped with a bayonet, which quickly got taken off and after the "awful 5 characteristics" went into effect, the bayonet mount was ground off and cold blued.Mine *DOES* have the slot in the bolt carrier for the stripper clips -- but it is a useless feature on this rifle for the most part. 0 -
Yes they made sporters with the regular type 56 stock but does yours say sporter on the receiver? Also did you buy the gun new in the box? It could have possibly been converted after it left the factory. Check your receiver and let us know. I am curious if they actually did make sporters without sporter stamped on the receiver. 0
