Old Single Shots -- I realize that this is off of the subject of your post---however, as I recall you were interested in a single shot 28 gauge shotgun. If you go to the auction section of this forum and run a search on "28 gauge", at least 2 of them pop up. One of them is a Winchester 37A and I don't remember off the top of my head what the other one is.Now I will hush and let you get on with the .444 lever gun.

Go with the Marlin. The newer Winchester lever guns are not the quality of years ago. The Marlins are much smoother. Just my 2 cents.

I got bit by the same bug. I picked up an older 444, standard barrel length, and sent it into Marlin and got a new rifled barrel. To replace the micro groove, Marlin charged $71.95 . They also put on new mag tube and forearm at no charge. I did this so I could have rifle without crossbolt safety. Barrel is 4" longer, but if it becomes a problem I'll shorten it or send it back to Marlin for an 18'. I also did not want the vented barrel. This is a much cheaper way to go, total investment $325. Just food for thought.
