.22 WRF is a unique cartridge. It is longer than the .22LR and shorter than the magnum. I don't know if anyone is loading the round anymore.WRF means Winchester Rim Fire and the round is not interchangeable with either the .22 LR or the .22 MRF.

fatbobcat,The WRF Winchester Rim Fire cartridge was developed just for the model 1890. The 1890's were made to only chamber one particular cartridge WRF, short, long, and about 1919 it was chambered for 22 long rifle. The 22 short was used extensively for gallery shooting. Your gun wasn't a gallery gun. It would have shot holes in the back of the gallery. Ammunition is not that hard to find. There was a Winchester run of it in 1986 and again in 1994. It will cost about $5.00-7.00 a box. They are neat guns and really crack for a 22. The last gun show I went to I noticed another company was manufacturing ammo, don't remember who.Don't hang that thing on the wall, they are to much fun to shoot. I've got several.Run a search on GB for 1890, the prices will amaze you.P.S. After that cartridge was developed several different gun manf. put out guns chambered for WRF. Remington also made the cartridge but called it 22 Remtington special. Colt chambered some pistols for it, there is one on auction either here or on another site, I dont remember.

I have shot a lot of the WRF. We always called it "22 Special." My Dad had a Colt Police Positive chambered for this. I use to take it out and shot it a lot. We used to buy the ammo for about $2 to $3 dollars a box. Then, 22 Mag was about $4. The 22 special (WRF) can be fired in 22 Mag revolvers. The opposite is not true. You can not shoot standard 22LR in the Special either. I do not know about firing the special rounds in anything other than revolvers. For quite some time the ammo was hard to find. I still have some of the old stuff in the old boxes. I would have to dig it out, which would be a chore. I have bought a couple of half bricks that was put out by Winchester in 1986. I was at the Raleigh Gun show yesterday and saw some in the plastic boxes as a "new run." The price was about $7 per box. Didn't buy any but bought a brick of Mag for $58. I guess the 22 Special is living up to it's name, it is a SPECIAL occasion for me to shoot any.
