Hello all. I purchaesed a 1911 a few years ago and I am not sure what I have. I looked up the serial number and it said that it could be a Union Switch ands Signal or a Colt. It has a Colt slide but does not say colt on the frame. On the mag release side behind the triger are the letters GHD, on the trigger guard on the fron is a W. The serial number is 1687155. There are crossed cannons on the side just forward of the hammer. There is also some writing on the frame above and forward of the serial number. I can sen pics but can't figure out how to upload them here.

    Thanks,
    Rick

I'm not familiar with the Rock Island M1911s, but one that I can recommend is the Argentine Modelo 1927.These are arsenal refurbished M1911A1s that are selling for about $250-300. They were manufactured in Argentina under Colt license, on Colt machinery, and under Colt supervision. All parts are interchangeable with Colt M1911A1s.The ones I've seen and shot are, in every way, the equivalent of Colt manufactured firearms.

Any comments on how the Bollester Monlina compares with the afore-mentioned pistols with regards to durability and reliability?

idsman75- I have owned both guns, Ballester-Molina and Argentine Modelo 27. There really isn't much difference except the B-M doesn't have a grip safety. Neither of them has decent sights or grips. I doubt there would be any difference in durability either. If I remember right, the B-M safety can be applied when the hammer is at half-cock which might be handy in some situations, although I can't think of any offhand. B-M is almost an exact copy of the Star model B only in .45acp caliber. The other thing is that most B-Ms I have seen are not in as good condition as most Modelo 27s. I think all the Argentine Colts on the market now have been refinished with a dull black finish of some kind. The one I had was imported many years ago and still had the original high-polish Colt-type blue finish. It was nice looking and as well made as most of the Hartford-built 1911s I have seen.
