What to use for model 19

I'm just getting back into the self defense firearm realm. Awhile ago I moved from a medium sized city to the middle of nowhere where you can leave your doors and car open at night. Problem is now I occasionally have to go into the city with alot of expensive stuff and don't feel very comfortable anymore. I have a 4" S&W model 19 which for financial reasons must stick with. What is the best load out there nowadays for self defense and practice. And what shoulder holsters or other holsters might work for this.
