You know, I have a similar question about firearm shipping on the discussion board and I can't get a reply either. Either noone knows the answer or it's a secret.

Sent it through the Postal system. They are much more reliable, safer and are not trying to rip you off. All ups (Unreliable Poor Service) wants is to get as much money from you as possible so they can pay for all the guns that are stolen within their system. When a handgun is sent with ups it has go go overnight. This puts a large "flag" on the package makeing it easier for their thieves to get it. USPS will accept firearms, just let them know when you send them.

It was my understanding that the Postal Service would not accept handguns from those without an FFL.

44 Mag,you must have an FFL to ship thru the Post Office, and it must go to an FFL holder.

UPS has a "Next Day Air Delivery Saver" that gets it there the next day, by 4:30 p.m. that is a little cheaper. Someone has to be available to sign and except the package. The more expensive "Next Day Air" delivers by 10:30 a.m.

The definitive answer is of the BATF site at http://www.atf.treas.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm No, handguns CANNOT be sent via USPS, only long guns are permitted.UPS or FedEx are authorized to ship handguns, however, it seems to be a matter of opinion at the local shipping offices. Apparently some of their personnel don't know the regs.Yes, an individual may ship a handgun to himself without an FFL but not via USPS.

I have shipped 50 or more handguns by USPS FFL to FFL in the last 12 months. I used to tell the clerk each time and offer a copy of my license; but he/she always said it was not necessary.

ref44,when a FFL ships a handgun through the Postal System (only FFLs can) he is supposed to fill out a Form #1508 with each handgun shipped. The Post Office has these forms.

Poster "ATF" is correct. Only FFLs can ship handguns through USPS.

I recently shipped a handgun via FedEx. It costed $22. This may seem excessive when compared to the price of shipping it through USPS by going through a dealer. However, dealers need to make money and will often charge a fee (in my experience) which will cause the overall price of shipping to exceed what would be paid if shipped via FedEx. Call FedEx first to ensure that you don't waste a trip to an office to deal with the ignorant that don't know their own company policy.
